On Saturday, April 5, 2025, our Sports Reach Softball Prison Ministry team traveled to Little Sandy Correctional Facility in Sandy Hook, Kentucky. It was a rainy, overcast kind of day, but Little Sandy asked us to go ahead and come despite the forecast.

When we arrived, the rain was coming off and on. Out on the field, we found the infield extremely muddy and full of puddles due to all the recent rain. So what did we do? We played softball anyway—with home plate set way out in left-center field. The outfield wasn’t much better than the muddy infield, as it too was covered in puddles. But we all wanted to play regardless.

About 30 inmates joined us out in the rain to play softball. Despite the off-and-on rain, we had a fantastic time. We were slipping and sliding, getting as wet and muddy as possible. It felt like we were a bunch of kids playing in the rain—slipping, sliding, and jumping into every puddle we came across.

In the midst of it all, we deepened old friendships, made new ones, had many great conversations, got wet and muddy, and shared the love of Jesus throughout the day as the rain came and went. By the end of the day, we had planted many seeds of the Gospel, and six men prayed to receive Christ.

Throughout the day, the inmates thanked us over and over for coming and staying, even though it was rainy. They always say, “A day outside playing softball with you all in the rain is always better than any day inside.” God is so good—He can take a rainy day and turn it into one filled with fun, fellowship, ministry, and softball.

To God be the glory! Thanks to all who prayed for us throughout the day. We can’t do this without the prayers of God’s people.

Our next trip is coming up on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Eastern Kentucky Correctional Facility in West Liberty, Kentucky. Please pray that many more inmates will be set free from the bondage of sin.
