My name is Robert Smith, and I’m a former inmate from a Florida prison. I’m reaching out to share my story of how Sports Reach and the Campbellsville basketball ministry changed my life.
In 2010, while incarcerated in Florida, I had the opportunity to coach against the Sports Reach basketball team and participate in their combine. For my age group, I won all of the awards—and I still have them to this day. Taking part in that experience, seeing how well I performed, and receiving something tangible gave me hope to pursue my dreams once I was released.
After serving nearly 11 years, I was released in 2013. I immediately enrolled at a community college in Minnesota, where I played both basketball and football. I earned my associate degree and later transferred to the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, where I played Division III football and earned my bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication.
After graduation, I began coaching at my former community college as an assistant football and basketball coach. I then accepted a position as Head Football Coach and Head Basketball Coach at another school about two hours away.
This past December, I completed my Master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration. I currently serve as an Athletic Director and Head Coach.
I’m reaching out because I know my calling is in sports ministry. I want to give hope to juveniles and incarcerated individuals—something for them to look forward to. I would love to get involved with Sports Reach. I’m especially interested in flag football and basketball ministry, and I have a reentry plan that I would appreciate some guidance and input on.
Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Robert Smith
